Longmont voters will decide this November whether to adopt ranked choice voting for future city elections after the City Council gave final approval Tuesday to placing the question on the ballot. A number of excited ranked choice voting supporters showed up in support with signs saying “RCV For Longmont.”
The new voting system would take effect in 2029
The council voted 6-1 to refer ranked choice voting to the Nov. 3 ballot, with Councilmember Diane Crist opposed. If approved by voters, the new voting system would take effect in 2029.
Mayor Susie Hidalgo-Fahring reminded the audience that the council has the authority to implement RCV without a ballot referral but that this council wants to make sure the public has an appetite for it.
